The Deimos Project

Lies, damn lies and statistics

Deimos cannot connect.

So, I recently installed Deimos. However, I get an error saying that it cannot connect to the statistics server. There's only one computer listed, my own, on localhost. So when I select it, it comes back with the error: "Unable to connect to the server : Connection refused" Any ideas on what may be wrong?

Edit: The problem seems to have came from deimos-svc failing to run. I couldn't start it myself, either. Upon installing the application a second time it seems to be up and running.

If it matters, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Edit two: Deimos-svc continues to crash repeatedly, so I have to keep restarting it. The amount of times deimos-svc crashes is just ridiculous. : | Also, I was wondering. Why is it that my hard drive does not show up? Is Deimos incompatable with SATA connected drives? Another thing. Why is it that the website statistics are so far behind? Even after submitting recent data, the website is far behind what the client shows. There also is an issue with Deimos dropping key and mouse tracking.

- Could you post the logs of the service? It's located in the C:\Program Files\Deimos\.deimos-service directory

- Deimos supports SATA harddisks but uses SMART to read information. Perhaps do you have it disabled?

- Website statistics are updated every hour.

- Does this happen in a certain scenario when starting a game or is it random? Are you running any other applications that may use keyboard hooks? (WhatPulse, anti RSI application etc)

Sure, I have logs, and logs.old.

My HDD doesn't support SMART, so, yeah.

It seems to be random, but there could also be a trigger. I became too frustrated with the constant service crash to bother looking into it. I do run another keyhook program, WhatPulse. WhatPulse's keyhook has aways dropped randomly in Windows 7, but for a while it was due to high CPU usage, which was later resolved by their developers. As if now, it's simply random. I have no idea if this is a related issue for Deimos, or something different. It's been several hours, and the website still hasn't updated with the client's recent information. A final note. It seems that the icon for the Deimos program does not show up on the Windows 7 taskbar. It does, but it's not consistent. Takes some fiddling to get it there, but it'll often go blank again, or just appear after screwing around with the program for a while.

Edit: After giving it another go, and messing around with it. I've noticed that deimos-svc doesn't seem to crash, or not often, at least, when the main window for the Deimos GUI is closed and just running without an open window, in the background. It's when you've brought it into the foreground, and have it running minimized, or actively browsing the GUI, when it begins to crash sporadicly.

Your statistics at the website now seem up to date :)

In any case, this is a very odd issue. 2 guesses:

1: You have another background application (virus?) with a malfunction keyboard hook. Could you post a Hijack This log?

2: You changed the "LowLevelKeyboardProc" key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop in the Windows Registry to another value but it isn't accepted or it overflows, resulting in a very short timeout. Try changing the value to the normal 10000 (make sure it's decimal)

After being idle for several hours. (Sleeping.) The website began to catch up.

Here's the log.

As for altering the registry, no, I haven't touched it. I did have it changed a while back, before I reinstalled my OS, when I was testing a registry change and how it performs with WhatPulse.

Edit: In an earlier post I mentioned that the deimos-svc would crash if the GUI was left visible, either for a short, or an extended period of time. I downloaded the Linux version and tested that out as well. This bug appears in both versions. The Windows and Linux one. deimos-svc crashes in both cases, under the same circumstances. I'd consider this a pretty serious bug, and something you'd want to look into. Also, if you were to make a newer version. You may want to implement that if deimos-svc, or any other part of the program crashes, it restarts itself. Either way, I hope this is something that will be looked into, and fixed somewhat shortly.

Your Hijack This log is ok.

There must be something that triggers a bug in Windows. What kind of mouse and keyboard do you have? USB? PS/2? Bluetooth?

Keyboard is PS/2, and my mouse is USB.
